Thread: backing up to rotating hard-drives

    Default backing up to rotating hard-drives

    Hello,

    I currently have backups working to a single external hard-drive divided
    up into 5 slots/directories, but we want a little more redundancy (like
    one HD stored in an off-site safe, while the other is in-place).

    I know the answer is probably super simple, but the more I ponder it,
    the more confused I make myself!

    Currently my config file using one HD resembles this:

    infofile "/etc/amanda/state/curinfo"
    logdir "/etc/amanda/state/log"
    indexdir "/etc/amanda/state/index"

    dumpuser "amandabackup"

    tpchanger "chg-disk:/var/lib/amanda/backup"
    labelstr "Tape-[0-1][0-9]"
    autolabel "Tape-%%" EMPTY VOLUME_ERROR

    # tapecycle: Specifies the number of "active" volumes - volumes that
    Amanda will not overwrite.
    tapecycle 5

    # dumpcycle: The number of days in the backup cycle.
    dumpcycle 5 days

    amrecover_changer "changer"
    autoflush yes

    tapetype "HARD-DISK"
    define tapetype HARD-DISK {
    comment "Dump to USB External Drive"
    length 3Gb # 3Gb/day * 5days < 16 Gb
    }

    define dumptype tarball {
    comment "for remote systems"
    compress client fast
    program "GNUTAR"
    }

    define dumptype comp-ssh {
    comment "testing ssh"
    auth "ssh"
    ssh_keys "/var/lib/amanda/.ssh/id_rsa"
    compress client fast
    program "GNUTAR"
    }

    holdingdisk hd1 {
    directory "/var/lib/amanda/holding"
    use 3000 Mb
    }
    If I want to switch out the harddrive every Monday morning, how could I
    modify this config to accomplish this???

    Which version of amanda are you using?

    Default

    put a '$m' in the autolabel setting
    set meta-autolabel.

    then simply change the disk.

    martineau,

    commenting out: labelstr "Tape-[0-1][0-9]"
    and setting: autolabel "$m-%%" EMPTY VOLUME_ERROR

    worked like a charm!

    Thank you!

    Rob.
