    Default amdump failing with error code 5

    Hi:

    Been using amanda for backups for 3 years now...back in Nov 2014, my automatic backups started failing. I just now noticed

    The amdump log is indicating amdump a failure of error code 5. I'm using a defined tapelist of 20 tapes with a disktype of HARDDISK of 500GB where the tapes get written as disk files on the backup hardisk. There is > 365GB free on the HARDDISK where backups go. My dump disk has ~650GB of free space. I'm using version 3.3.7-1-rhel6. Here are some snippets from my amanda.conf:

    tapetype HARDDISK

    holdingdisk hd1 {
    comment "main holding disk"
    directory "/home/dumps/amanda" # where the holding disk is
    use -50 Gb # how much space can we use on it
    # a non-positive value means:
    # use all space but that value
    chunksize 1Gb # size of chunk if you want big dump to be
    # dumped on multiple files on holding disks
    # N Kb/Mb/Gb split images in chunks of size N
    # The maximum value should be
    # (MAX_FILE_SIZE - 1Mb)
    # 0 same as INT_MAX bytes
    }

    define tapetype HARDDISK {
    length 500000 mbytes
    }

    System disk info:

    [[email protected] DailySet1]# df -h
    Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/mapper/vg_macarhel-lv_root
    50G 26G 21G 56% /
    tmpfs 7.4G 172K 7.4G 1% /dev/shm
    /dev/sda1 485M 89M 371M 20% /boot
    /dev/mapper/vg_macarhel-lv_opt
    492G 35G 433G 8% /opt
    /dev/sdb1 46G 875M 43G 2% /d1
    /dev/sdb2 46G 665M 43G 2% /d2
    /dev/sdb3 825G 199G 585G 26% /home
    /dev/sdc1 459G 80G 356G 19% /backup

    What might be the cause of this error?

    thx.

    looks like the planner is timing out trying to figure out how long to wait for gnutar to determine how big the backup will be...

    etimeout >??

    Default issue resolved...

    Sure enough...the timeout for doing the planner part was not long enough...over time, # files/dirs in the backup list was too large for 300 seconds.
