I have a machine as a amanda server and client too. Amanda server always backup data to external disk, content of the external disk are like this :

drwxrws--- 4 amandabackup disk 4096 Mar 7 01:00 ..
-rw------- 1 amandabackup disk 32768 Mar 7 01:17 00000.DailySet-20130307
-rw------- 1 amandabackup disk 5876735 Mar 7 01:17 00001.svr01.pontianak.local._boot.0
-rw------- 1 amandabackup disk 1579193 Mar 7 01:18 00002.svr01.pontianak.local._tmp.0
-rw------- 1 amandabackup disk 148679627294 Mar 7 06:48 00003.svr01.pontianak.local._exports_share.0
-rw------- 1 amandabackup disk 19525420079 Mar 7 07:48 00004.svr01.pontianak.local._exports_users.0
-rw------- 1 amandabackup disk 4780802427 Mar 7 08:05 00005.svr01.pontianak.local._.0

all user data are saved in 00004.svr01.pontianak.local._exports_users.0 , I had an experience an user deleted a file from a folder. I restored the file by this command :

#dd if=00004.svr01.pontianak.local._exports_users.0 bs=32k skip=1 | tar -zxvf - -C /mnt/backup

I think this command is okay but it will run very long time because all data will be restored.

Can you explain to me how to restore a specific file from a disk ?

thanks
