Thread: Config tree external drive in rotation.

    Default Config tree external drive in rotation.

    Hi,

    I'm wondering if I could maybe get a little help with my configuration. I have three external drives (via e-sata) that are 2TB each. Right now a full backup is around 150GB~. I let the backup run from monday to friday and then I change disk on friday. I need at least one full backup on each drive.
    Right now I only have 5 slots per drive but I guess I could increase that.

    I'm also wondering what happens if one drive is full, does Amanda delete the oldest backup if needed then or do I need to do that manually?
    The config that I use right now is below and is just something I put together, I don't even know if it's properly done and if I need all those dumptypes!?

    Code:
    org                     "DiskBackup"
    mailto                  "me@company.com"

    infofile                "/usr/local/etc/amanda/DiskBackup/curinfo"
    logdir                  "/usr/local/etc/amanda/DiskBackup/log"
    indexdir                "/usr/local/etc/amanda/DiskBackup/index"
    dumpuser                "amandabackup"

    tpchanger               "chg-disk"
    changerfile             "/usr/local/etc/amanda/DiskBackup/chg-disk-status"
    tapedev                 "file:/media/usb-backup/vtapes"
    tapetype                HARD-DISK
    labelstr                "Tape-[ABC][1-5]$"
    tapecycle               6
    dumpcycle               5 days
    amrecover_changer       "changer"
    autoflush               yes

    define tapetype HARD-DISK {
            comment "Dump onto hard disk"
            length 418816 mbytes
    }

    define dumptype global {
            comment "Global definitions"
    }

    define dumptype root-tar {
            global
            program "GNUTAR"
            comment "root partitions dumped with tar"
            compress none
            index
            exclude list "/usr/local/etc/amanda/exclude.txt"
            priority high
    }

    define dumptype user-tar {
            root-tar
            comment "user partitions dumped with tar"
            priority medium
    }

    define dumptype comp-user-tar {
            user-tar
            compress client fast
    }

    Hi, all sounds good.

    I'm also wondering what happens if one drive is full, does Amanda delete the oldest backup if needed then or do I need to do that manually?
    Tapecycle controls that. You say you have 5 slots per drive and I see tapecycle is 6. This is good. This prevents Amanda from overwriting the "tapes" on the same drive if left connected to the server longer than 5 backup runs but it means it should always be able to use a tape on a newly connected drive.

    At a cursory glance, looks good. It is fine to have extra dumptypes.
