Default Multiple backups to same virtual tape

    Hi ,

I'm backing data on a virtual tape ( NFS mounted filesystem)
I've to take backup 2 times on the same filesystem.

But once i take backup using amdump , and initiate backup 2nd time it gives error .

Is there any setting we have to do in order to take multiple backups on the same device ??

After 1st backup completion when i do amcheck :

    -bash-3.2$ amcheck DailySet1
    Amanda Tape Server Host Check
    -----------------------------
Holding disk /home/amanda: 24481792 KB disk space available, using 24379392 KB
found in slot 1: volume 'DailySet1-01'
slot 1: volume 'DailySet1-01' is still active and cannot be overwritten
    all slots have been loaded
Taper scan algorithm did not find an acceptable volume.
    (expecting a new volume)
    ERROR: No acceptable volumes found
    Server check took 0.132 seconds

    Amanda Backup Client Hosts Check
    --------------------------------
Client check: 1 host checked in 2.025 seconds. 0 problems found.

    I've attached amdump file.

    Hi!

The issue is that you only have 1 virtual tape and your tapecycle setting protects this one tape. If you want to have two backup runs on tape at the same time, you need to have at least 2 tapes. Simply create one or more tapes for this config and adjust tapecycle to be the same number of tapes.

It is possible to back up to vtapes simultaneously in Amanda 3.3 but I believe you are referring more to my mention of having more than one backup run on tape at the same time? In this case, I am refering to retention--how many backup runs you are keeping--rather than parallel backups. As generally each backup run goes to a different tape, how many tapes you provide for a config determines how many backup runs are kept. Currently, you have a virtual tape changer with 1 tape in it. Thus, you can only keep one backup run. You can either set tapecycle to 1 if this is all the backup runs you want to keep (not recommended) or you can provide more tapes so more backup runs can be kept at a time.
