We have a small remote site (2 host) and we pull dumps over the network (VPN over Internet) with Amanda back to head office and tape it there. I was trying to see if there was a way to compress network traffic only specifically for these two hosts so I can bring the load on the WAN link down and speed up the backups. I would like to avoid enabling compression to tape as we don't do this for any of the other DLEs.

Ah, hosts are all CentOS x64, 5.5 or 5.6. Amanda 2.5.0p2-8.el5. Upgrading Amanda can be an option, but from from looking at the release notes I didn't see anything to indicate this type of functionality being added in.
