Lightbulb Blue Ray as tape device?

I was just wondering if anyone has used a blue-ray burner as a tape device with amanda and/or zmanda?

With support for them built into the kernel and burning programs in general use I was hoping to find a less expensive way to archive my backups, but wanted to see if someone else has tried this yet?

(Hope I'm not the first but if I am, well, someone has to )

We have had users use Amanda for backing up on optical devices. Not sure about Blue Ray though.

That's good to hear at least. Think I might make the experiment as tape devices are just to expensive for us at the moment.

I haven't priced Blu Ray burners of late. That said, would hard drive backup (vtape) work for you?

We're already using hard drive based backup, but we'd like something that's easier to carry between sites to make the offsite system easier. (At one site we're actually backing up to thecus N4100+ devices. Bit of hassle to setup but once it's running it's quite nice.)

I've looked at tape drives and while they have a decent TCO (total cost of ownership) the initial investment is quite high. Now that 50GB DVDs are available for ~$9 each that's looking more like a possible route (internal burner prices are down to $150-$200 each.)

Got to finish one other project before I do anything with this, but I think I talked myself into the experiment at least.
