Default 2 Problems with zmanda client on hive

I am having frequent problems backing up one of our windows clients with Zmanda. The 2 problems I am having are:

    1) The machine says it is doing a level 1 backup, but it backs up the whole DLE rather than performing an incremental.

    2) Frequent crashes (once every several days).

    Machine Profile:

Windows 2003 Enterprise, Service Pack 2 32 bit

    Zmanda client version: 2.6.1.3-32
    Amanda server version: 2.6.1p1

I don't see any events in our events viewer which point to a hardware failure.

I have placed the zmanda client in debug mode before the crash this morning, so I have the log and dump available. Is it okay if I send them to you for analysis?

    Hi,
Can you please collect the logs using "Start > Programs > Zmanda...> ZWC Support" & send us the logs at 'communtiy@zmanda.com'.

    Regards,

I've resent them. My mailserver logs confirm your mailserver received them. The smtp message ID your server gave me was 5FA1C1500139 so you can check your mail logs to see what happened if you don't get this one either.

I sent this to you May 22nd, and your server gave me the ID 5F47DB453E2. Did you receive it?

Yes, we have received the logs.

    1. Your incremental backups are not working because, your windows client sometimes receives backup request from 10.10.9.250 and sometimes from 10.10.9.252. Make sure that all backup request come from the same server.

    2. To debug ZWCService crash issue, pl. run setup-debug-env.bat before backup and then collect and send us the logs if ZWCService crashes.

    3. There are few VSS errors in application event log due to which snapshot is not getting created and hence backup of few files is failing.

    4. In the latest LogFile.txt, there are logs like following

7236:10020:18/5/2010:05:42:916::SF: SFOperation: Failed to create thread for given operation
7236:10020:18/5/2010:05:42:916::SF: FomratManager: Failed to start formatting
7236:10020:18/5/2010:05:42:916::CZWCJobHandler : Failed to configure the FS module
7236:10020:18/5/2010:05:42:556::zwcVSS: zwcGetProviderInformation: Query provider failed 0x80042301
7236:10020:18/5/2010:05:42:603::zwcVSS: GetWriterCount: Failed to gather writer metadata 0x8007000e
7236:10020:18/5/2010:05:42:603::InitSnapshotModule : Failed to initialize the snapshot module
7236:10020:18/5/2010:05:42:603::CZWCJobHandler : Failed to create the volume snapshot
7236:10020:18/5/2010:05:42:603::FS: FileManager: StartOperation: Failed to create thread for reading streams 8
7236:10020:18/5/2010:05:42:603::SF: SFOperation: Failed to create thread for given operation
7236:10020:18/5/2010:05:42:603::SF: FomratManager: Failed to start formatting

Means ZWCService was not able to create threads to do the requested operation. Also in Application event log following event was logged on 18th May

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: VSS
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 12296
    Date: 5/18/2010
    Time: 4:12:44 PM
    User: N/A
    Computer: HIVE
    Description:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: The system may be low on resources. Unexpected error at background thread creation (_beginthreadex returns 0x00000000, errno = 0x0000000c).

Pl. see that while running the backups, your system is not overloaded and has lack of system resources.

    5. Also make sure that Antivirus software is not scheduled at the time of backup. Its observed that scanning for virues at the time of backup causes backup failuares.

re 1: Yes this (10.10.9.252) is our system monitor, nagios, checking to verify that the amanda service is listening on port 10080. It doesn't issue any commands to the port, just verifies it can create a tcp connection. Would that be enough to cause problems with the backup schedule doing full backups on intermittent runs? I am taking the nagios check off and will test.

re 2: I did run setup-debug-env.bat before I did the backup and said that Dr. Watson was activated, and then it crashed during the backup. I assumed running the zwcsupport utility would send that crash dump as part of the package. Where is this core dump kept? I will look for it and send it along.

But from your logs, its clear that backup requests are coming from this server.

Pl. check if there is user.dmp on c:\. If you find one, send it to us.
