Default file missing from tape after change dumpcycle ??

    I'm a newbee , using amanda 2.6.0 in RHEL 64 bit.

I found that my previous file ( file1 ) in tape is missing after these changes :

    1. change my dumpcycle and runspercycle in amanda.conf.
    2. add file2 in /data
    3. run amdump

now when i run amrecover, it shows only file2.
I tried to recover manually using dd command , still it's only shows file2.
    any ideas ?

Have you overwritten the tape with file1 on it? If not, it shouldn't have gone anywhere.

Did you remove file from your disk?
If yes, then in amrecover you must set the date (setdate) to a date where the file exist
If you didn't removed file1, then do you still hace a full dump on tape? 'amadmin <conf> find'
Amanda can't recover file if you overwrite the tape it was on.

I didnt remove file from disk and I didnt have the full dump on tape. It seems just been over written.

    Because i'm confused , I try this experiment :

    1. setup 8 vtape, backup 4 files ( with amdump 4 times )
    2. see the result is working fine.
    3. change tapecycle from 8 to 4 in amanda.conf
    4. add file5 to disk, run amdump. report says goes to vtape1.
    5. run amrecover, and I cannot see file number 1. I check the vtape slot 1, the full dump just been overwritten.
    6. run amdump again ( no changes in my files ), report says goes to tape2.
    7. run amrecover, now my file2 is missing.
    8. run amdump again ( no change ), now file3 is missing in amrecover.

Qustion : is this normal amanda behave this way ?
I'm positive now, i didnt accidently remove files.

It's normal behavior, by setting tapecycle to 4, you told amanda it can overwrite the oldest of your 4 tapes, that is what it did,

Why do you reduced tapecycle? Do you still have 8 vtapes?
btw. In case something go wrong, you should have have a few more vtapes that dumpcycle * runspercycle * runtapes.

    I see.
I change the tapecycle just for experiment. I didnt do it in my production environment. But maybe sometimes in future I might need to.

Still, is there a way to reduce from 8 tape to 4 tape without overwrite the tape?

    thnks

Make sure you have a full in the latest 3 tapes (tapecycle-1) before reducing tapecycle.
