    firewall

    I think the firewall is causing the "Connection reset by peer", i suggest you disable the firewall completly and try connecting again, this way you can know for sure.

    1. The fact that netstat command returns nothing tells me that the amanda service is not running.
    Run this:
    a. service xinetd restart
    b. tail -f /var/log/messages
