I am building a server that will provide data storage and backup for my network. I am interested in using hot swap hard drives for file backup to be stored offline.

Has anyone tried implementing hot swap SATA drives under Redhat Linux using Amanda?

Also, is media spanning during backup/restore implemented for any type of storage media, i.e. tape, hard drive?

Hi Derek,

We are using hot swap SATA drives with Amanda for testing. Are you planning
to remove the SATA drive after full backup for archival needs?

Amanda 2.5.0 supports backup images spanning media volumes - tapes, disks ... Amanda also has support for RAIT where backups are done in parallel to different storage media.

Thanks,
Paddy

Correct. I would be using the drive in the same manner as a tape.

Hi Derek,

Thanks for your reply. Amanda should work. The hot swap drives will act as disk media for
Amanda. I guess you should following proper procedures when you remove the disk from the system.

If you face any problems, let us know.

Paddy

Paddy, thanks for answering my questions. I will be sure to post more questions as I build my system.
