View Full Version : Superloader 3 uncompressed?

I have a new Quantum Superloader3 with a DLT-S4 drive. The drive works in compressed mode, and there doesn't seem to be a way to change it. It says that it's up to the backup software to switch it to uncompressed. This must be possible with amanda, since the tapetype list includes a sample file created with this exact configuration in uncompressed mode. How is this done?

I'll answer my own question. Often the act of writing down the question will stimulate my mental processes. The answer is that it can be done with mt. It has some options that I didn't know about. It pays to scroll down the man page beyond the first screen.

The command
mt -f /dev/st0 compression off
will turn off compression for the current tape. The command
mt -f /dev/st0 defcompression off
will make "no compression" the default for the drive.

You could have found the answer in Amanda wiki (http://wiki.zmanda.com/index.php/Hardware_compression)

Thanks for the link. The "search" window on the main wiki page doesn't show anything useful for the keyword "compression". I would never have found this page without your help.
