I'm trying to use an Exabyte VXA-1a tape drive to provide backup for a RedHat 9
system. Can I use Amanda for this and if so, which version should I use as there doesn't seem to be an RPM specifically for RedHat 9?

Amanda works well with Exabyte tape drives. You can find more information
at [URL=http://wiki.zmanda.com]Amanda wiki[URL].

You will have compile Amanda for Red Hat 9.

Thanks Paddy,
But does that mean I need a C++ compiler for linux, eg Intel(R) C++ Compiler for Linux*?

No. C++ compiler is not required. Amanda code is C and Perl. You will need GNU automake tools.
