View Full Version : Doing md5sums/compression from the LVM snapshot?

December 13th, 2006, 06:52 PM

Right now, a full backup requires approximately 150% of the total size of the database, because full database is copied to the backup medium, then it is md5sum'd, compressed and finally deleted.

When using LVM snapshots, though, it seems like the backup tree could be built using hardlinks inside the snapshot and the compressed tree could then be output to the backup destination directly.

This would be a win for us and we'd gladly incur the extra IO on our backed up drives to avoid having to write the full database out, read it back via NFS for MD5 and then read it back again to compress it.

Would Zmanda accept a patch that added this approach as an option?

Our general statement about community contributions:

We will accept patches from any community member. Patch should
have GPL license. We will review the patches (including rewriting the
code if needed), integrate the patches with the top of trunk tree. We will
test the patches on all supported configurations. The functionality will
make it to next community release.
