I'm very new to Amanda. In fact all I've done is troubleshooting for the last 2 days. This forum seems very helpful and I'm hoping I can find someone to give me some guidance.
This is my problem:

I have installed Amanda on a OpenSuSE 11.2 (this is the Amanda server)
192.168.170.240
I want to backup a SuSE Enterprise Linux 10 SP2 (this is the Amanda client)
192.168.170.15

I'm receiving "connect to 192.168.170.15.10080 failed: Connection refused" messages.
As you can see this is on a local subnet.

If I disable the firewall on both systems I still receive the same message.

Here is the contents of server /etc/xinetd.d/amanda:

service amanda
{
socket_type = stream
protocol = tcp
wait = yes
user = amanda
group = amanda
groups = yes
server = /usr/lib/amanda/amandad
disable = no
server_args = -auth=bsdtcp amdump amindexd amidxtaped
}
service amandaidx
{
socket_type = stream
protocol = tcp
wait = no
user = amanda
group = amanda
groups = yes
server = /usr/lib/amanda/amindexd
disable = no
}
service amidxtape
{
socket_type = stream
protocol = tcp
wait = no
user = amanda
group = amanda
groups = yes
server = /usr/lib/amanda/amidxtaped
disable = no
}

Contents of cat /tmp/amanda/server/daily/amcheck*last_file_in_logs*

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Which version(s) of Amanda did you install?

First off, I take it you can ping each machine from the other. If not, you have a problem that isn't amanda.

Second, did you restart xinetd after you added those files to its configuration?

(Sorry if those two are obvious; I find it's easy to miss the obvious. :-)

Did you install from Zmanda packages? In that case the user is "amandabackup", not "amanda".

Do you see anything in your system logs?

I realized I posted in the wrong installation forum, sorry.
Version 2.6.1p1
I can ping to and from both systems, yes.
I have seen the "restart xinetd" solution a couple times, I did restart xinetd.

I did NOT install the Zmanda package

Anything related to amanda in the system logs say this:
bind failed (Address already in use (errno = 98)). service = amandaidx
localhost xinetd[20793]: Service amandaidx failed to start and is deactivated.

Is there something else I can check?

I receive this error when I run amcheck daily as the amanda user:
selfcheck request failed: Connection refused
Client check: 1 host checked in 10.478 seconds. 1 problem found.

It really seems like with all the "quick start" documentation for openSuSE and SuSE Enterprise that there would be a solution for this.

Does anyone else know what I can check?

Please?

I'll give you whatever information I can.

I see a few things in here I'd check out. Port 585, like all ports below 1024, is reserved for root. Non-root users should not be able to use them (unless they run setUID, which has its own problems). Also, it looks like Amanda is trying to start from an interface with an IP address of 0.0.0.0, which sounds unlikely to me. Tou may need to configure an interface for Amanda to use. See the INTERFACE SECTION of "man amanda.conf".

Thank you for the suggestions Charles. I'm much closer to resolving my issues.
