Hey guys,

just wondering if anybody knows why it has taken 24 hours so far to complete the amtapetype command and still hasnt completed!

the tape drive i am using is a HP Surestore dat 40 C5687, and the command i used to initiate amtapetype is:

amtapetype -f /dev/st0 -e 40 -o

Thanks in advance,

jared.

That does seem excessive. The doc (http://wiki.zmanda.com/index.php/Tapetype_definitions) say 5-8 hours.

I don't have that particular drive but it does run a long time, assuming all is right with your hardware and setup.

Message from amtapetype (http://wiki.zmanda.com/index.php/Amtapetype):
Estimated time to write 2 * 12288 Mbyte: 22656 sec = 6 h 17 min

Do you see a similar message. It comes out pretty quick.

There is more info here (http://amanda.sourceforge.net/fom-serve/cache/45.html), at the Amanda Faq-O-Matic on tapetype for various devices.

In your command example, shouldn't the device be nst0 (nonrewinding) and not st0.

Do you see any error messages in the system log?

Jared,

-e parameter is incorrect. You should use a good estimate. If you use a small value, you will write lot of files.

Try amtapetype -e 40g ... Use a large value for estimated size.
