View Full Version : Retreiving Amanda data w/otu Amanda

Hi all. One of the big pitches about Amanda is the ability to retrieve your data without necessarily using Amanda itself, as they are supposedly tar files. Alas, I have yet to retrieve a file without Amanda. I have tried many times to gzip/untar data files, and I am always told it isn't a tar file or a zip file.

I am using the comp-user-tar method, and I thought this was the appropriate one for the untar functionality. I also see the gzip and tar commands in the email used for RECOVER_CMD.

This is very important to us as we wish to store certain parts of data over a long period of time. Not all of it, but some, and I would like to grab those backups and keep them elsewhere.

Can anyone explain how to retrieve your data without amanda?

The basic idea is explained here http://wiki.zmanda.com/index.php/Amanda_chapter_in_Backup_and_Recovery#Amanda_recov ery. Amanda's tape format includes a header that can be read using dd. That header gives the commands to read the tape. There is more detail on Amanda recovery here http://wiki.zmanda.com/index.php/Restoring_files, with examples of various situations.
