I am trying to install Amanda 2.6.0p2 on my Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 server. In following the 15 minute white paper guide, everything goes fine until I run my first amcheck. I am getting two problems.

Main problem (I think):

amcheck: could not open temporary amcheck output file /tmp/amanda/amcheck.temp.8077: Permission denied. Check permissions

Second problem:
In checking my amanda.conf file, I changed the tapetype to Quantum-DLT-V4. After I did this, I received an error when I run amcheck
end of line expected

Please help! My wife won't let me do anything else until I get this backup system going.

Thanks.

So have you checked permissions? Can the amanda user read/write to /tmp/amanda?

Please post the line or section you manually edited in amanda.conf.

Actually, this is a sort of simplistic answer. Yes, permissions do need to be checked, but what exactly are the correct permissions? r/w wasn't enough, and thats what it was set at. I had to actually change the permissions to include list, and make sure it wasn't necessarily set userid, etc.

In this case, the correct permissions will be 0770. Not the original 0660 mine were set at for some reason.

Sorry you found it simplistic. Glad your problem is solved!
