Does anyone have any thoughts or experience using Zmanda Enterprise to backup laptops that may only connected to the corporate network during business hours or less frequently due to travel?

Thanks,
Clay

This has been discussed on the Amanda users list. There is a lengthy suggestion on sourceforge concerning how to implement it (from a user's perspective):

http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1808366&group_id=120&atid=100120

As far as I know, there is no easy way to do it without getting something like that elevated to a priority project and implemented.

Thanks for the information Chris. For an open source way of backing up mobile user equipment, what's the preferred or recommended product? I've seen BackupPC but are there others the folks in this community might recommend?

You can write a script that runs on the server and runs amdump for any laptops it is able to ping. This can be run multiple times a day to try to catch every laptop available on the network that day.
