Default Backups not running

I am using Zmanda Backup 1.0.2 on Windows Server 2008 x64, with the Administrator account.

I have scheduled two nightly backups, one to disk and one to S3. All looks good, the two ZWB Windows services are running ... except that nothing happens, the scheduled backups don't run.

What shall I check?

Thanks,
Bernard

Hi Bernard,
Can you please provide us more info on:
1. Do you see any details about the backups in the Reports section?
2. What happens if you manually try to run the backup. You can do so by right clicking on the backup set and then selecting the type of backup you want to run.

Regards,
Prashant

Hi Prashant,

The manual backups work fine (actually my last upload to S3 failed, but I am not too worried about that now).

The report section does not show anything about the scheduled nightly backups. They just don't run. The report section displays reports only about the "backup now" (manual) backups I performed.

Shall I restart the ZWC-Service and ZWC-MySQL services?

Also, Volume Shadow Copy is running, and I am backing up plain files (some of them could be in use while I backup).

Thanks,
Bernard

Hi Bernard,
Thanks for the info. It is strange that the scheduled backups dont run. I am curious to know if the schedules have actually got added in the Windows Scheduled tasks. Can you check if the scheduled backups show up in Control Panel > Scheduled tasks.

If yes, try to run the scheduled manually. Try restarting the ZWCservice in case the schedules do not run manually.

If you dont see the scheduled backups, then there could be an issue with ZIB installation.

Regards,
Prashant

Hi Prashant,

The tasks are in the Task Scheduler Library, which shows:

- The operation being requested was not performed because the user has not logged on to the network. The specified service does not exist. (0x800704DD).

Did I miss a step during the installation?

Thanks,
Bernard

Hi Bernard,
It looks like a privilege issue seen while running schedules on Win Vista and 2008 Server by a user other than Administrator.

Could you please try the following:
1. In case you have created the schedules in ZIB using a user other Administrator, launch ZIB GUI using "Run as Administrator" option. This can be done by:
Go to Start > Programs > Accessories. Right click on "Command Prompt" and select "Run as Administrator".
Then run the commands:
cd "Zmanda_install_dir\bin"
java -jar ZIB.jar

2. Once the ZIB gui is launched, create a test backupset and add a schedule. Enter the Administrator account credentials for adding the schedule.

3. From the "Task Scheduler Library" try running the added schedule.

4. If this works, for the existing schedules, you can select the option "Run with highest privileges" in the properties of the schedules in the "Task Schedule library" and run them manually to check if that helps.

In case this does not work, please give us the following information:
1. What user credentials were used to launch ZIB gui and add schedules?
2. Send us the log files by clicking on "Tools > Collect logs" from the ZIB gui.

Regards,
Prashant

Hi Prashant,

I looked more closely at the Task Scheduler and fixed this problem another way (before your follow-up):

- the backups were already scheduled to run as administrator

- however, in Security Options, "Run only when user is logged on" was selected (and of course I did not keep administrator logged on all the time); I changed that to "Run whether user is logged on or not"

- I also selected the "Configure for Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008" to be able to check the "Do not store password. This task will only have access to local resources"

It seems to work fine now (the backups ran last night).

Thanks,
Bernard
