pre-backup and post-backup: cmd?

Hi,

Quick question: Can pre-backup-plugin and post-backup-plugin just be shell scripts and not the perl template you guys specify? I have scripts I wrote a while ago that prevent new records from being added to my table externally from MySQL and would like to run them before the backup begins...
