The sourceforge FAQ (http://amanda.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/fom?_recurse=1&file=25#file_84) shows same device and tape, but many tapetype definitions.

If the same drives, in this case Sony SDT9000, and tapes (DDS3), are used why would there be such a variance in tapetype definitions?

Thank you.

amtapetype results depends on the tape drive, tape, connectivity to tape
from the machine, HBA.

amtapetype writes random data to figure out speed, size information. Anything
that could impact write performance would be a factor.

Good part is Amanda does uses only size information. Other information is
for informational purpose. The size is used in estimate phase. Overestimation/underestimation of size might result inefficient media utilization. Backups will not fail under these circumstances.
